Donation isn't painless but the discomfort is minor. Someone who has donated bone marrow describes the discomfort of the procedure as being similar to a sports injujry. There is an ache that subsides quickly and is responsive to pain relievers. That's the downside of being chosen as a donor. The upside is that your bone marrow may save someone's life.
Consider carefully whether or not you would like to register. Your registration is a commitment to be tested once again should a potential match be found, and to then donate if your tissue type is a match with someone who needs a donation. It would be disappointing to someone in need if your type was found matching but you declined to donate, so please make sure you are willing to donate before you register.
How Do I Register?
There is an administrative cost for the registration of approximately $50. Sometimes bone marrow drives are organized such that this cost is waived.
